Marshawn Lynch has been making money from his unwillingness to speak and that has been misinterpreted as genius. It’s more consequential and happenstance than anything. Social media has turned his silence into popular culture, which has had the brands calling. Not his intent.
And now, he’s at it again. Last year, he had no choice to but trademark “About that action, boss” after his Super Bowl media day line took off. This year, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” was even more popular and Lynch is looking to trademark that as well. He plans on selling merchandise donning that phrase in the coming weeks, per Darren Rovell of ESPN.
“We heard from our fans and so many of them were saying that they wanted that phrase on the clothing,” Chris Bevans, who runs Lynch’s “Beast Mode” apparel line. “This is just listening to the marketplace.”
