Will There be a Blend of New and Returning Coaches in the NBA Next Season?

By Ron Leyba

Following a 2013 – 2014 regular season full of surprises, we are now getting ready for a bunch of significant changes in a several teams around the league. Former powerhouses like the New York Knicks, the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers failed to even make it to the playoffs. The Knicks and the Lakers have already parted ways with their respective Head Coaches and they, along with other teams around the league are in search of their new Head Coach. Let’s see which will most probably be the new coaches, the new faces in the NBA next season.

Steve Kerr

Of course, Steve Kerr is anything but a new face in the NBA. He was a longtime player in the league and he now continues to stay around the league as an analyst for TNT. Since the New York Knicks hired Phil Jackson as their new President, Steve Kerr’s has been widely heard across the media and linked to the Knicks. Jackson seems to be eager to hire Steve Kerr as the new Head Coach of the team, although the 48 year old former guard has no actual coaching experience. The Los Angeles Lakers, who just recently parted ways with their Head Coach Mike D’Antoni, are also interested in hiring Kerr.

John Calipari

One of the most talked – about college coaches, who is currently at the head of Kentucky is reportedly a candidate for the Lakers’ vacant Head Coach position. Calipari has found great success in the college level and he is considered to be one of the best fits for the LA Lakers, given that the Lakers will have to develop some of their young players and Calipari has found success in this particular part in college.

Jeff Van Gundy

Jeff Van Gundy is another familiar face in the NBA, as he now serves as analyst for TNT. He also was a Head Coach in NBA, spending six years with the New York Knicks and another four with the Houston Rockets. Van Gundy is yet another name linked to the Los Angeles Lakers but he could also be interested in heading back to NYC and take over as the Knicks’ new Head Coach.

Kevin Ollie

Another college coach who is linked to the Los Angeles Lakers is Kevin Ollie. If he makes the big step and enters the NBA, he will be a totally new face and he could give a breath of fresh air to the Los Angeles Lakers. Ollie is now considered as one of the lead candidates for the Lakers’ position, together with Calipari.

George Karl

George Karl won the NBA Coach of the Year award back in 2013 before sitting out of the entire 2013 – 2014 season. He is one of the most respected coaches around the league and it might take an ideal situation for him to return to action. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves seem to be interested in making an offer to him. However, it’s almost certain that Karl won’t accept the position, since he would be rather interested in coaching a championship or at least contending team, if he ever returns to the league.
