The NBA is usually ahead of the sporting curve when it comes to innovative ways to brand the league and make money and the Sacramento Kings are proof (although, that doesn’t mean they’re always good ideas).
Apparently, Isaiah Thomas of the Kings plugs a local pizza spot named Pizza Guys and that relationship is taking a new turn. In the first-ever co-branding effort, Thomas will wear a co-branded nickname jersey this weekend. For example, it may say “Pizza Guy” on the back, according to NBA.com:
“Led by Vivek, our organization’s mantra is to be leaders in innovation,” said Kings President Chris Granger. “It is with great excitement that we are teaming up with proud partner Pizza Guys and the star of their hit commercials, Isaiah Thomas, to reveal a new product that delivers on that goal. And who’s better at delivery than Pizza Guys?”
Since launch of the ever-popular Pizza Guys “I’m a Pizza Guy” commercials, featuring Thomas, the Kings guard has earned the moniker “Pizza Guy” from the world’s loudest fanbase.
This takes marketing to an entirely new level and builds on the nickname jerseys that the Heat and Nets wore earlier in the year.
And, oh yeah, the jerseys will be available for purchase.
