While in New Orleans, I spent some time at the adidas VIP suite in order to meet some folks I’ve only met via email and to interview a few ball players. One in particular was supposed to have been Damian Lillard, but a scheduling conflict disallowed that from happening. Instead, I ended up running into the defending Rookie of the Year at Jam Session instead.
But now, “adidas” and “Damian Lillard” may no longer be in the same sentence. According to Chris Haynes of CSNNW, Lillard will opt out of his adidas contracts. Apparently, there’s some language written in the contract that allows him to opt-out if he hit certain milestones his first two seasons. After winning Rookie of the Year and being named an All-Star in less than two seasons, he has apparently met those.
He can either re-negotiate for more money, or jump ship. If it ends up being the latter, that’s no good for adidas who is still reeling over Derrick Rose’s current injury situation.
