By way of he week-long ranting around Thanksgiving, we know that Kanye West has parted ways with Nike and has teamed up with adidas. Today, that deal with adidas was made official and is reportedly worth $10 million, according to the New York Post.
West cited dissatisfation with certain dealings as to why he decided to leave Nike.
“I asked them when the Red Octobers come out and they said ‘we’re not sure’. They told me, Kanye West they’re not sure”, he vented during a myriad of radio interviews over the past few weeks. He also explained that he was not receiving royalties from the Yeezys and that he was making $4 million a year with them.
West was astonished that Nike didn’t give him the respect he felt he deserved since he is the “biggest rock star on the planet” and the “most influential artist over the last ten years.” Personally, I disagree with both of those claims. If you have to tell people that, then it’s not true. It should just happen and be known. But having said all of that, I will contend that a controversial figure like him is definitely needed, as he is a wildly fascinating individual. We need that.
Details of the adidas deal aren’t fully clear, but it appears that he’ll have more latitude here than with Nike.
Here’s the official statement from adidas:
“For 2014, we welcome to the adidas family one of the most influential cultural icons of this generation, Kanye West. Well known for breaking boundaries across music, film and design and partnering with our history in street wear culture and leading innovations in sport, we look forward to creating a new chapter. Details to follow.”
