Jason Collins has revealed to Sports Illustrated that he is gay. Allow me to provide a bit more clarity: Active NBA player for the Washington Wizards, Jason Collins has revealed that he is gay. Collins is now legendary as he is the first active male athlete for a major North American sport to announce that he is gay. Some have opened up after retirement, but never during.
Listen, this is 2013. If this were in the 90s, this wouldn’t go over that well. But in this day, surprisingly, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I always imagined my reaction to be a bit different that what it actually is when this day came. But again, it’s not really that big of a deal. Collins deserves all of the credit in the world because he absolutely had no reason to do this.
For the past year or so, we’ve heard increasing rumors that there were many gay active athletes that were thinking about coming out of the closet. Now that Collins has broken the seal, I expect this revelation to be more frequent from those who are afraid to open up. Bravo, Jason.
Collins tells SI:
I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay. …
I’m not exactly sure why the “…I’m black… ” part is relevant, but perhaps that’s besides the point.
