Gregg Popovich Rests Stars During Nationally Televised Game, Stern Not Amused

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t care about anything other than winning championships. He truly doesn’t. He’ll routinely gives his key guys nights off so that they can remain fresh. Especially when they have played many games so close together.

That was the case Thursday night when Pop decided to give Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker the night off even though the Spurs were set to take on the Miami Heat on a nationally televised TNT game. So the world had to watch some nondescript Spurs vs. LeBron, Wade, Ray Allen, Chris Bosh, etc. Not only did that make the game less interesting, but it also got David Stern fired up.

There has to be more to this for Pop. There’s a dynamic to this that isn’t yet apparent. Stay tuned.

Said David Stern on TNT during the game:

“I apologize to all NBA fans,” Stern said. “This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming.”
