More so than anyone on TV today, Charles Barkley can get away with saying just about anything. If he says something outrageous or questionable, we chalk it up to “Charles being Charles.” But this time, I can’t simply give him a pass.
A few days ago, golfing great Greg Norman stated that he thinks Tiger Woods is intimidated by Rory McElroy. Personally, I think that’s nonsense. Tiger responded in a politically correct way saying he disagrees. But according to Charles, he was too nice in his response. Barkley was a guest on ESPN radio in Chicago and said the following:
“I would like for him to just blast Greg Norman … That situation gave everybody a chance to dump on you, and (Tiger) still tried to take the high road. I’m not a high road guy. I want him to come out and really blast Greg Norman .. .I wish he would just go ballistic on Greg … I wish I could put some of my blackness in him … like toughness … (I’ve been) arrested eight times for fighting … just because I’m Charles Barkley, you can’t disrespect me … you just can’t say anything to me anytime you want to”
I have to call out Chuck because he is implying that Tiger isn’t black enough because he hasn’t been arrested eight times for fighting. If Chuck simply would’ve said he wishes Tiger would be tougher, cool. But for him to associated being black with unruly behavior is ignorant. Off-topic, but I’ve always found it funny that Chuck is so “pro-black” but has a white ex-wife.
