Earlier in the week, the head football at Arkansas, Bobby Petrino, was involved in a bad motorcycle accident. As the week progressed, we heard news that his condition was improving and should be released from the hospital soon.
Then yesterday, the story took a turn – for the worse, if you’re Petrino. Apparently, on the back of the motorcycle was a 25 year old former Arkansas volleyball player, whom Petrino recently hired as the student-athlete development coordinator for the football team, Jessica Dorrell. On the surface, this doesn’t strike me as a big deal but apparently it is.
Naturally, Petrino is married and Dorrell is reportedly engaged, and Petrino has admitted to having an affair. Even that doesn’t strike me as too uncommon. But because she is a subordinate employee, Arkansas has placed Petrino on administrative paid leave. Why he is being punished and still being paid is beyond me.
But the part that gets me is how sloppy he was. Look, I’m not judging Bobby Petrino for cheating on his wife because, personally, I couldn’t care less. That has absolutely no impact on my life. But how silly and irresponsible is it for him to creep with someone who works for the school and joyride with her on a motorcycle? If he’s going to creep, why not do so discreetly as opposed to a vehicle that is prone to accidents? Based on his negligence and stupidity, he deserved to be outed.
I don’t think he should be fired, but it will be tough for him to earn respect of anyone in football circles. So, given that however, he probably will be fired.
Petrino’s quote from yesterday:
“My concern was to protect my family and a previous inappropriate relationship from becoming public,” he said. “In hindsight, I showed a serious mistake in judgment when I chose not to be more specific about those details. Today, I’ve acknowledged this previous inappropriate relationship with my family and those within the athletic department administration.”
